The influence of periphyton, detritus and shelter on invertebrate colonization of aquatic bryophytes
1. Artificial bryophytes were placed in a shaded and an unshaded New Zealand alpine stream to investigate why invertebrates colonized these structures and, by inference, real plants. Three experiments were conducted to investigate the influence of (i) periphyton and detritus (ii) shelter, and (iii) time, on invertebrate colonization. 2. In the first experiment, seven taxa at the unshaded site displayed a preference for substrata with high detrital and periphyton biomass, presumably reflecting a food relationship. At the shaded, less stable site, only two taxa displayed such a relationship. 3. Reducing substratum ‘stem’ density (i.e. ‘shelter’) in the second experiment had little effect on the biomass of periphyton at each site, and only at the shaded site was detrital biomass reduced on low-density substrata. Abundances of most of the twenty-two invertebrate taxa analysed were unaffected by stem density reduction: densities of only four taxa at the unshaded site, and two at the shaded site were reduced. 4. Stepwise multiple regression showed that invertebrate abundance was little affected by stem density at either site. Indeed, shelter was the primary factor influencing abundance of only two of twenty-two taxa at the unshaded site, and none at the shaded site. Abundances of most taxa were related to periphyton or detrital biomass at each site. 5. The third experiment investigated temporal relationships between invertebrate density, periphyton and detrital biomass, and exposure time of artificial bryophytes. Regression analyses indicated that of twenty-two taxa at the stable, unshaded site, eight were influenced by periphyton biomass, three by detrital biomass, and two by exposure time. Immunoelectron microscopic techniques were utilized to characterize the morphology of circumsporozoite protein-containing trails deposited on various substrates by gliding Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites. The basic components of the trails are beadlike particles, 25 to 90 nm in diameter, which are devoid of unit membrane and have an electronlucent center. Trails were captured on formvar-covered grids coated with anticircumsporozoite protein monoclonal antibodies and compared with trails produced on uncoated formvar; the results suggest that material containing circumsporozoite protein forms the matrix within which the particles are embedded. The trails exhibit morphological features similar to those displayed by circumsporozoite precipitation reactions; of note is the demonstration of sheaths of circumsporozoite protein-containing material that emanate from sporozoites prior to their gliding. The sheaths narrow into accumulations of electron-dense material, which eventually taper to form typical trails. The structural manifestation of sheaths and other morphological details of the formed trails enables us to correlate sporozoite behavior during trail formation with the motile actions of gliding sporozoites observed by light microscopy. 相似文献

Abstract The potential distribution of the herbaceous weed Senecio madagascariensis Poir. (fireweed) in Australia was estimated using the Bioclimate Prediction System, BIOCLIM. Climate profiles for S. madagascariensis predicted that suitable areas occurred only in the south-eastern region of Australia. Its potential to spread outside these areas was assessed by comparing the present African and South American distributions of this species with that observed in Australia. The rate of spread of S. madagascariensis in New South Wales was exponential, although in some regions, such as the Gloucester River Valley, the rates had decreased because all farms had become infested. The results indicate that S. madagascariensis may spread and increase in abundance along the far south coast of New South Wales and in south-eastern Queensland. Coastal areas in eastern Victoria and as far north in Queensland as the Tropic of Capricorn may be invaded. 相似文献

The ability of primary wheat grains (cv. Sappo) to germinatewas determined at different times from anthesis. Fresh, prematurelyharvested grains germinated best at low temperatures (<10°C). The temperature range over which appreciable germinationtook place broadened and the maximum percentage germinationachieved increased with lengthening time between anthesis andharvest. Chilling and exogenous applications of GA3 each affectedthe rate of germination and the maximum percentage germinationof grains in their own ways. The distribution of Drosophila subobscura adults within, and their movement through, open ground habitats has been investigated, along with the status of such individuals within populations as a whole. Movement occurs between open ground and woodland, to some extent as a result of passive transport by air currents, but flies can remain in open ground for at least several days at a time. There are no detectable differences in either the reproductive age-structure or the body-size distributions of flies collected from woodland and open ground habitats, although a significantly higher proportion of females are found in open ground than in woodland. The large number of gravid females in open ground provide the potential for breeding there, but circumstantial evidence suggests that this is unlikely to occur. Rather, their presence appears to reflect the foraging strategy adopted by females in response to their high nutritional requirements. The flux of flies through open ground between woodlands suggests that previous estimates of the genetically-important parameter, effective population size, have been seriously underestimated for natural D. subobscura populations. 相似文献

Typical thoracic setae are composed of longitudinally arranged cylinders ending as teeth at the oblique distal surface. Most thoracic 'blades' are rounded in cross section and show bilateral asymmetry. Some have teeth in oblique rows ("cross striations") on the side adjoining the tube wall. Sickle setae found posteriorly on the thorax have distal portions like abdominal setae. These are flat, each composed mainly of a palisade of spatulate units. On one side cylindrical elements may also be present, in patterns which are characteristic of some taxa. Uncini are made of rows (sometimes single) of shorter cylindrical elements with hooked ends pointing anteriorly. Anterior thoracic hooks are usually blunt, but pointed in the genus Janua. The collar setae assist withdrawal into the tube, the abdominal setae help with emergence, whilst other thoracic setae act as distance pieces, pushing the body to anchor the thoracic uncini against the opposite wall. The other uncini are brought into use by the prehensile abdomen. The flaccid ends of the sickle setae are readily lost in some taxa and their development or loss may reflect unimportant variations in strength of the adjacent abdominal field. Fin and blade setae are not very different from simple setae and the natural grouping of the genera into subfamilies shows that changes from one form of collar seta to another have occurred independently several times. 相似文献

The effects of a number of metabolic inhibitors on calcificationand photosynthesis in Halimeda tuna, H. discoidea, and H. macrolobaare described. The inhibitors used are CCCP, DNP, DCMU, azide,cyanide, chloramphenicol, cycloheximide, and Diamox. The effectsof these inhibitors, although complex, are consistent with ourmodel of calcification in Halimeda. Inhibition of photosyntheticCO2 uptake inhibits calcification as does stimulation of respiratoryCO2 evolution (i.e. uncoupling). There is also indirect evidencefor the presence of a possible light stimulated H+ efflux whichinhibits calcification. The observed calcification rate is thereforethe result of a number of factors which affect the concentrationof COand the pH in the intercellular space of the Halimedathallus. The results obtained with the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor Diamoxprovide further evidence for the effective separation of theintercellular space from the external medium by the appressedperipheral utricles. 相似文献
